  • Crochet and Spread Joy

I had the pleasure of making a custom Rainbow Shell pullover for a local Artist friend of mine. She truly is “Rainbow Bright,” and has the uncanny ability to spread joy to all she meets with her art and her personality.

Her name is Gwenn Semell and I am proud to have her artwork (sticker size for now) all over my home and electronic devices. Gwenn isn’t on social media by choice, but shares her words and talent on her website. (Gwennseemel.com) I highly recommend subscribing to receive updates of her latest posts, but a must see is her Gallery of work.

Gwenn’s passion of art and the ability to spread joy have recently converged in a project to cover and beautify the Political vandalism done to a recently rebuilt locke Bridge. The Bridge is located along the canal path on the north end of Lambertville. Her efforts were applauded by many and was approached and featured on NJ.com.

I’ve attached it below for your viewing pleasure.

Gwenn approached me and told me about what she’s been doing. While on a walk she came across a tree that had been defaced with Spray Paint. Again political in nature and covering most of the trunk that lines the riding / walking path that separates the Delaware River and D & R Canal. She asked if I would take a look at the tree and see if I could possibly make a piece of Fiber Art to wrap around the tree, thus hiding the Political Slang. I of course gave her an emphatic “YES!” and immediately started plotting in my Brain the next steps to take and color-ways, construction and design for the Tree Wrap.

That weekend I took my two girls out for a “Walk-venture”. This luckily is my old stomping grounds as a kid and its only a short 10 min walk from our home. So off we went, down the path, up the hill, across the old trestle bridge, down the other side to the abandon train. Then it was just a matter of finding that tree.

But first we stopped to climb on the abandon graffiti art train. I love how it changes constantly and can find something new to look at every time you stop.

Below is a picture of my two “Dragons” inspecting to see if there are any new pieces aboard.

It was Chilly but not brutally cold and the Sun was a very welcoming site. We throughly soaked up as much vitamin D as we could that day, but before we went home we had to complete our mission to find that tree and measure its girth but also to see how long the piece had to be.

    Tree located. And measured.

The piece I’m going to make will measure 40″ x 80″ (Girth x Height)

So stay tuned for updates and pictures of the construction and installation.

  • SNOW DAY!!

My kids are off School today for SNOW, and so far its been a productive day. And no that is not the snow we just got, this was a photo my Grandfather took back in the 50’s. I just love the Juxtaposition and it’s fitting for the title.

However, I’ve spent a lot of time working on my site today. As you can see I’m Blogging.

I baked two dozen chocolate chip cookies for us to have in the house to snack on. And I tried a recipe my husband DM’d me through Insta. (why are they always food related DM’s)

He sent me the Recipe for Pretzel’s! Easy to make and fun to do with the kids. They came out amazing! Unfortunately, my husband is working both jobs back to back today because of the Snow storm and we no longer have any left! haha. So I will be whipping up another batch tomorrow so when he comes home they are hot and fresh.

Jason for the Snow Day Win!

  • How it all Started…

My beginning is like most crocheters “I learned how to crochet from my Grandmother.”

(“circa 1990, 30 years +3 years working my brand)

That’s how I like to reference my “skill/ ability” level

This is my Grandmother, taken in 1953 in front of the High School that once stood on the hillside of Lambertville, NJ. She was in 8th grade in this picture. About the age of my oldest daughter now. And she “walked to school, up hill both ways!”

Even though she is no longer with us; her Wisdom, Humor and Love are carried on everyday. I’ve taken the reigns of passing on the family recipes and teaching my girls the same way she taught me and my cousins.

My love for finding Ancestors and working on Genealogy is because of her. It’s like going on a Treasure Hunt and finding clues. I’ve been doing a lot of this lately because we are having a Family Reunion and I’ve been going through the boxes of Genealogy my Grandmother bequeathed me. As well as scanning photo albums that go back to the mid 1800’s.

I have this written sign on my cork board next to my desk to make me smile; but it’s actually a “portal” to my best memories as a kid. That gives me the Dopamine I need to get things done.

I could write for hours on the subject of my Grandmother but for now I’ll leave this the end of my very first Blog post.
